Sydney Lynn Carter
SYDNEY LYNN LUKHARD CARTER, 72 , passed away unexpectedly January 22, 2025. The first born of Ronald LaVerne “Cotton” Lukhard and Norma Mae Hughes Lukhard of Glen Allen, Va. The family moved about the country during her early years as her father’s job as a construction superintendent took them to various cities across the U.S. The family settled back at home in Glen Allen and by now her family had grown to include four other siblings. Being the oldest, she had an early start in helping to care for her brothers and sisters. Sydney was a graduate of Hermitage High School where she was a member of the “Triangle One “ Service Club and served on the “Teen Boards” of both Thalhimer’s and Miller and Rhoads Department Stores. She started her working career with the Insurance Plan of Va. and later moved to Central National Bank in Richmond where she helped establish and manage their Single Interest Insurance Plan. It was at CNB that she met her husband Richard. Sydney had an “inner drive” that caused her to excel at whatever she attempted. She brightened every room she walked into with her beautiful smile, sense of humor and quick wit. She loved everyone and went out of her way to help in any way she could. She made many friends very quickly and several became life-long and as close as sisters. Melinda Lee and Connie Pappalardo became two of these. When Sydney’s own family began to grow she became a stay at home Mom to watch over her two daughters and son during their formulative years. When she decided they were ready, she went back to work as a realtor with Coldwell-Banker Vaughan and Co. and later Re-Max Today. She loved seeing the new homes as evidenced by the family moving every 4 to 5 years! She had a keen eye for decorating and painting and would change room colors to keep up with the current styles. Her last move was to Lancaster County, VA. on the Corrottoman River. She and Richard loved the water view and decided to retire there. She loved the “river life” and became involved in the community through the Corrottoman Baptist Church Thrift Shop. She made many fast friends in the Church family.
Sydney is survived by her husband of 47 years Richard C Carter, Sr, two daughters, Stephanie Taylor and Elizabeth Couch (Matt), granddaughter Kaitlynn Carter, grandsons Jacob Couch, Cody and Carter Dennis, Embrey Davis (Emily) and Great grandson Charles Davis. She is also survived by sister’s Deborah Lukhard, Susan Kassman (Neal) and brother Jeffrey Lukhard (Emily) and a host of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother and father, son Richard C Carter, Jr “Corey”, and brother Steven Lukhard (Sauni)
She was the best sister, wife, mother and friend. She was loved by all and will be missed greatly.
