Steve Ellery Saunders
Steve Ellery Saunders, 67, of North Chesterfield, VA, peacefully passed away on January 13, 2022, after a brief illness.
Steve was born in Lynchburg, VA to Wilmore and Hilda Saunders, and moved to Richmond, VA in 1965. Steve graduated from Armstrong High School in 1973. In his younger years, Steve was a talented musician and played the electric guitar as a member of the band, Midnight Sun.
After he graduated, Steve landed his first job as a clerk with the United States Postal Service. This began a long career with the postal service from which he retired after 38 years of service. In 1973, Steve met his wife, Katherine Messer Saunders and went on to have two beautiful children.
Steve was a devoted husband, father, and friend. He was a loving and kind man who adored his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. A loyal and dedicated friend, he remained in contact with many of his friends from elementary school, high school, and beyond. by actively engaging with them through Facebook.
Steve loved classic rock and was a passionate sports enthusiast. He was a devoted Virginia Tech Hokie fan and spent most of his retirement years cheering on any Hokie team he could find televised or live streamed. He loved discussing his beloved Hokies with fellow fans and dedicated opponents.
Steve was predeceased by his parents, Wilmore and Hida Saunders, his sister, Shirley Beasley, and one brother, Eugene Saunders. Steve leaves behind his wife, Katherine Messer Saunders; one brother, Thomas Saunders (Alice), two children, Kimberly Stroud (Jamie), Christopher Saunders (Michelle), six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 12 at 2:30, Kitty Hawk Baptist Church, 3946 North Croatan Highway, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949.
