Nancy Yates Jenkins
April 24, 1947 – June 8, 2024
Nancy Yates Jenkins (Yates), 77, of Rockville, Virginia, walked into Jesus’ arms on Saturday, June 8, 2024 after a six-year fight with breast cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family in the preceding days, and it was evident she was at peace and ready to see our Lord.
Yates is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Frank Jenkins Sr.; two children, Frank Jenkins Jr. and Kim Gunn (Tim); three grandchildren, Courtney Monk (Bobby), Colton Gunn and Tex Stinnett; two great-grandchildren, Noah Radcliffe and Callum Monk; two sisters, Margaret Bright and Shirley Frye Hitt, and a beloved dear friend of over 40 years, Beaulah Wood. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews from her hometown area of Sperryville, Virginia that love and adore her.
She was preceded in death by her parents John Lloyd and Carrie Jenkins; brothers Bubba, Charles, Eddie and Bobby, and sister Rachel.
Nancy, better known as Yates, was the youngest of eight children born at Mt. Vernon Farm. She always talked about the mischief that they got into – and as the baby, she never got in trouble! Her family and faith were the core to her life. Losing her daddy at the age of 3, she quickly learned how to lean on her siblings and mother each day. She was always there for family events, weddings, funerals, new babies…you name it, she was there. She was proud to say that she was part of the first graduating class of the “new” Rappahannock County High School in 1965. While she and Frank moved to Richmond in 1965, she NEVER really left the Sperryville/Culpeper area in her heart.
She loved the Lord, her family, flowers and Elvis Presley. To the day she died, she read her daily devotions and Bible. She knew where she was going, and she told the Hospice doctor “I’m ready to go home.” You could always hear music going while she was outside planting the largest flower garden in the neighborhood. People would drive by just to look at it. Typically, the music was either Elvis or classic country. She knew what she liked – not that “new country!”
In 2019, she was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer, one of the most aggressive forms. She fought each moment from then on through weekly chemo treatments, countless scans, multiple trips to MD Anderson in Houston, and finally with multiple gamma knife procedures when it spread to her brain. This woman was a BEAST – and fought hard for six years with a disease whose survivor rate of 18-24 months. During this time, she was blessed with so many angels walking on this Earth from the Bon Secours Oncology and Infusion Center, Dr. Brewster from MD Anderson, and finally at the Bon Secours Community Hospice House. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for taking such good care of her and loving her like we do.
Per her wishes, there will be Celebration of Life on Wednesday, June 19 from 2-5pm at the Hermitage Country Club at 1248 Hermitage Road, Manakin-Sabot, VA 23103. Family members will share starting at 3pm. Casual attire. No suits, ties or formal dresses. She asked that we celebrate her life – with minimal tears – by sharing stories, funny moments and songs. She always loved a good song!
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to one of two places special to her: Bon Secours Community Hospice House 1133 Old Bon Air Road, North Chesterfield, VA 23235 or MD Anderson Cancer Center P.O. Box 4486, Houston, TX 77210-4486.
