James W. “Gee” Stanley, Sr.

HENRICO, VA

James W. “Gee” Stanley, Sr., 97, passed peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior December 27, 2024, at the home of his daughter in Henrico County after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s.  He was born on July 31, 1927, the son of Robert L. and Mary Lou (Tate) Stanley of Hanover County.  He formerly resided in Hanover and Caroline Counties.

Gee grew up in Hanover County, VA.  He served his country during WWII in the US Navy, and the Virginia National Guard.  After returning from WWII, he completed his 4-year carpentry apprenticeship at the Richmond Technical Center.  He also was a former member of the Glen Allen VFW Post 10657 in Elmont.  Gee owned and operated Stanley Demolition during the 1970’s and worked until his retirement as a master carpenter at Century Construction, in Richmond, VA.  Gee deeply loved his family, community, farming, beekeeping, and gardening.  Most notably, was his love of bluegrass and gospel music.  He began playing at an early age on a Hawaiian guitar that was a gift to him and continued playing his guitar until just days before his passing.  He played in many churches, basements, barns, dance halls, and the Gospel Chicken House throughout his lifetime.  Gee taught many in his community how to play the guitar and even shared some of his “hot guitar licks” with those just learning to play.  He kept alive old fiddle tunes he learned from his grandfather and was always eager to share his love of his guitar with anyone willing to learn or listen.  He blessed so many in his family and community with his musical talent.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Pauline Bowles and brother Robert L. Stanley, Jr. and his wife Margaret (Gray) Stanley.  He is survived by his son, James W. “Bill” Stanley, Jr., Sheila Stanley, two stepsons, Orian B. and Mark Harris, one stepdaughter, Arlene Gray, two grandchildren, Perla and Christian Penaloza, and many nieces and nephews.

A service of remembrance will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery located at 10300 Pridesville Rd, Amelia Courthouse, VA 23002.  The family will receive visitors at the home of his daughter at 8506 Sedgemoor Dr., Henrico, VA from 2-5 p.m. following the funeral service.  Floral arrangements may be delivered to Richmond Coach and Cremation located at 8500 Staples Mill Road, Henrico, VA.

A special thanks is given to all of the people who cared for Gee in his last days.  Dr. Judy Brannen- McGuire VA Hospital, Care Advantage, Affinity Hospice and Kathy Burton.  Thank you all for your kindness and compassion.
