James (Jim) McLaughlin

McLaughlin, James (Jim), of Mechanicsville, went to his eternal home on Saturday, June 22, 2024 surrounded by his family and friends, leaving behind a legacy of strong faith and cherished memories.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife and soulmate of 21 years, Renee McLaughlin, and their four daughters: Chantal Pennington, Samantha Odell (Chris), Christina Fang (Gary), and Heather Hamilton (Ken). He also leaves behind several grandchildren, his brother Joe (Robin), his sister Joanne (Dean), several nieces and nephews and a multitude of other cherished relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Juaneta McLaughlin.

A pillar in his community, Jim began his career in law enforcement with the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office as a Reserve Deputy in 1984, transitioning to a full-time Deputy in 1994. In 1998, he assumed the role of a Certified Crime Prevention Specialist and was promoted to the well-deserved position of Sergeant in 2021. Throughout his 40 years of dedicated service, Jim’s commitment to his community was evident in everything he touched, yet he always prioritized his family.  He was a member of the Sandston Masonic Lodge #244 for over 30 years.

He was honorably discharged from the Army National Guard 224 Field Artillery Group and was a member of the Providence Forge Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Squad.  Beyond his professional achievements, Jim had a passion for travel. He and his family explored all 50 states and 8 countries together, creating cherished memories along the way. Jim’s kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication will be deeply missed by all who knew him. May he rest in eternal peace, and his spirit forever be cherished in the hearts of those he touched.

His Celebration of Life will be Saturday, June 29th, 2024, at Fairmount Christian Church 6502 Creighton Road, Mechanicsville, VA 23111, beginning at 2 pm.

    My deepest sincere sympathy to the family and coworkers of Sgt. James P. ‘Jim’ McLaughlin. I didn’t know him personally but, I have friends on the Richmond Police force.
