Henry Coleman Whitfield

Henry Coleman Whitfield, born on May 7, 1939, in Fairfax, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2025, in Glen Allen, Virginia with family by his side.

Henry was the beloved son of Mary and John Whitfield and grew up in a large family with three older brothers (Frank, Bill and Jimmy) and two older sisters (June and Mary).

A graduate of Fairfax High School in June 1957, Henry answered the call to serve his country shortly after graduation. He joined the Navy in July 1957 and served honorably until July 1961. Following his naval service, he enlisted in the Army in August 1961 and continued his dedicated service until July 1964. In the Navy he learned aircraft maintenance and while in the Army, he received special training in electronic devices repair.

It was while stationed at Fort Eustis in Newport News, Virginia, that he met Sue Northstein from Gloucester County. The two were married on December 5, 1964, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with love and dedication.

Henry worked as an electrician throughout his career and joined Bear Island Paper Company in Ashland, Virginia, in 1979. He remained with the company until his retirement in 2002. Known for his strong work ethic and mechanical aptitude, Henry could fix just about anything. Whether it was automobiles, home repair or lawnmower equipment, he approached every project with patience and precision.

In his free time, Henry enjoyed boating, fishing, and motorcycle riding. He loved taking his family out on the Chesapeake Bay on weekends during the summer months. He was an avid television viewer who loved watching sports and laughing along with late-night FOX News shows. A fan of country and Western music, he often found joy in its melodies and lyrics. Henry believed deeply in the power of laughter and often said that “laughter is the best medicine.”

He is survived by his wife Sue and four children: Robert “Robbie” (wife Joy), Teresa, John, and Jason (wife Angie) as well as grandchildren Jessica, Sophia (husband Isaiah), and Angelia.

He is also survived by his sister Mary (husband Jerry) of San Antonio, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private family celebration of life will happen at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Henry’s memory.
