David Barrow Brown
“God, family, and country”—these pillars defined David Barrow Brown. Born on May 3, 1928, in Brunswick County, Virginia, David was one of 14 children of Willie and Virginia Brown. Receiving his early education in local Virginia schools, David’s goal of serving his country led him to join the Army Air Corps. He was assigned to the Japanese Occupation Force, subsequently receiving the World War II Victory Medal.
Before leaving military service in 1949, he relocated to Washington, D.C., to pursue his dream of becoming a pilot. Despite his aspirations, personal challenges prevented him from earning his official wings. Nonetheless, David’s patriotism and love for his country never wavered.
His next pursuit of an engineering career, he attended the prestigious Armstrong High School in DC. Following high school, he received a mechanical engineering degree from Howard University. David then embarked on a distinguished career as a civilian naval engineer, contributing significantly to the exploratory and development of future navy logistics ships. He received numerous awards and accolades for his exemplary government service.
Residing in Washington D.C. for many years, he cultivated a passion for firearms, becoming an expert marksman and enjoying hunting and fishing in his spare time. Following retirement, he returned to Richmond, Virginia, establishing a lawn and landscaping business.
David is survived by his two sons, Dwayne and Darrell, and his dear friend Laverne. He was preceded in death by another son, Andre. David leaves behind a loving family that includes grandsons, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was the last of his siblings to pass away.
