Agnes Schmitz
Agnes Schmitz, age 90, residing at Commonwealth Senior Living in Henrico, VA died on June 28, 2023 at 4:40pm from end stage osteoporosis. Agnes was born in Old Forge, PA, whose parents were Della Malesky (Petronella Kalinuauskas) and Alec Malesky (Alexander Malaskiewich) on December 1, 1932. Her predeceased siblings are Alexander Jr., Mary, Joseph, Edward, William, and Michael. Agnes grew up in Old Forge with her older siblings, and would go wild berry picking. She once became lost in the meadow and had to climb a tree to find her way home. Agnes graduated from Old Forge High School in 1948. She was close with her sister Mary throughout their lives. Agnes was also close with Mary’s oldest, Margaret (Peggy). Peggy and Agnes would go to the movies. Peggy was in Agnes’s Maid of Honor and organized her bridal shower. Agnes moved with her parents to Buffalo, NY, learned switchboard operating, and became employed at AT&T. She met her brother Michael’s best friend, Raymond F Schmitz (predeceased April 19, 2000), and dated. They married in 1960 at Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Buffalo, NY. After marriage, they moved to Binghamton, NY. Their first child, James Schmitz, died at two weeks old from spine deformities. Ray and Agnes then moved to Depew, and had two healthy children. Mary and Agnes would have family birthday and holiday parties together as their kids grew up. They moved their family to Slidell, LA for 3 years, then relocated back to Western NY by settling in North Tonawanda. During her retirement years, her sister and brothers would gather at Family Tree Family Restaurant in Amherst NY on Fridays. Whoever was visiting in town would also join them and have good conversation and food. They would then pile into a car or minivan to go bargain hunting at Big Lots, Dollar Tree, Entemann’s, and Niagara Produce. Agnes also had artistic hobbies including painting and glazing ceramics, porcelain doll making, and seamstress. Agnes made her daughter’s prom dress. She was charitable to her brother Whitey and Amvets. Once widowed, the extended family, including the Kalson’s, the Malesky’s, the Sciandra’s, and the Sly’s, made sure to include her in holidays and family functions. She was determined to live in Buffalo, as long as she could until her daughter and son insisted that she live closer to her grandchildren. She moved to Virginia in July 2020. Agnes is survived by her son Patrick E Schmitz, her daughter in law Dennise Wong Schmitz, and by her daughter Patricia L. Schmitz and her son in law Sridhar Neralla. She also leaves behind 3 grandsons Raymond N Neralla, Anand C Neralla, an Evan R Neralla. A memorial reception and burial service will be planned in Western New York so her family and friends can share in her life celebration August 2023. Email schmitzp3@yahoo.com or usssch@aol.com after August 1 2023 for questions. In lieu of flowers, she asked for contributions to be made at amvet.org.
