Janet Michelle Slayton Garton
Janet Michelle Slayton Garton passed away unexpectedly on July 13, 2024 at Chippenham Hospital. Born July 21, 1962 in South Hill Va., the cherished daughter of Kermit and Shelby Slayton.
After graduating from Longwood College, Janet began her career with Hopewell City Schools as a 2nd Grade teacher. Midway through her career, she joined Chesterfield County’s Harrowgate Elementary School, the school she attended as a child and from where she retired. Teaching students to read was her passion and, from an early age, knew that’s what she was born to do.
In addition to teaching, Janet was all about family and loved our Lord Jesus Christ. She married Fred Garton from Gordonsville Va. in 1985. Together they raised three boys; twins Scott and Taylor, and their younger brother Andrew in a loving home in Chester Va., the community she was raised in. In retirement Janet stayed active with her family, and extended family, for whatever the occasion may be and always there to love and support all.
Predeceased by her mother Shelby, Janet is survived by her father Kermit Slayton, husband Frederick Garton, three sons, Scott, Taylor, and Andrew, and sister Susan Slayton. Grandchildren; Lucy, Jonathan, Rosie, Wesley, and Wyatt, daughters-in-law; Rebecca and Sarah, Andrew’s girlfriend Anna, and the loving family pet Scout.
Janet was a treasured daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and teacher and will be missed for eternity. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 20, 2024, 11:00am at Ivey Memorial Congregational Methodist Church, 17120 Jeff Davis Highway, Colonial Heights, VA 23834. A reception will be held in the fellowship hall immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers the family encourages your support to your local school with supplies, time, and love. Alternatively, donations can be made to Ivey Memorial Congregational Methodist Church, in which Janet was a member.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date at Sunset Memorial Park in Chester, Va.
