Roger Darrell Fling

Mechanicsville, VA — Roger Darrell Fling, age 77, returned to his heavenly home on June 30th, 2022 after a valiant battle with a long-term illness. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace.

Roger was blessed with a large and loving family that includes three surviving children, Denise Moore (Bruce Moore), Francis Fling (Kim Fling) & Timothy Fling. He also leaves behind six  grandchildren: Micah Fling, Alison Fling, Maisey Fling, Zachary Moore, Collin Moore, and Bethany Bernal. Roger is preceded in death by Janice Fling, his wife of 50 years, and his son Roger Fling Jr. Lastly, he leaves behind his beloved canine companion, Ellie.

Roger  was a veteran of the United States Navy where he proudly served as a member of the The Navy Construction Battalion, the Seabees. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Navy never left him, as friends and family will attest, and he loved to speak at length about his adventures traveling around the globe while serving his country.

Roger later became an ordained minister and would go on to serve the Lord as a pastor in Vermont, New York, and Florida. From an early age, he was immersed in the Christian community which would serve him as a lifelong support. From the very beginning, he dedicated his children to God and encouraged them to explore the beauty of the gospel, leading his eldest son, Roger, and his grandson, Zachary, to become pastors as well.

In addition, Roger was a retired Safety Supervisor of the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority,  in Pinellas County, Florida, where he enjoyed his role providing safe, reliable transport to the citizens of the county.

Roger was kind and soft-spoken, and he always had time to answer a question or solve a problem, no matter how small. He is dearly missed by his loved ones, who celebrate the fact that he is at peace with his creator.

Services will be held Friday July 29th, at 3pm, at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery of Amelia, located at 10300 Prideville Rd Amelia, Virginia 23002.

Please feel free to attend if you would like to pay your respects.
